Last week, the NMS 8th Grade Choir got to travel to The Ned Performing Arts Center in Jackson to preview "The Wiz, Jr." along with several other area schools. To say it was incredible would be an understatement! We were enthralled by the costumes, set design, choreography, and characters--but what we were most excited about was watching some of our very own choir students perform on the big stage!
There were about NINE students total that are either current students at Northeast or former students who are now in high school, and boy, did they shine in the spotlight! We were particularly proud of Caleb Williams, who played the Wiz, Jordyn Shaw, who played Aunt Em, and our own Joshua Emery, who DAZZLED the audience as the Lion! Joshua was surely a fan favorite, and his classmates were so excited to see him perform in a role that was obviously made for him. One of our other students even made the class cupcakes with lion faces on them to celebrate his amazing performance! In my time at Northeast, I have always been blown away by the talent of our students, but some years I am more impressed with how my students support and encourage each other. This experience definitely topped that list for me! Watching the performance was a great experience, but watching these students cheer for and encourage some of their own was really the icing on the cake AND the cherry on top for this performance-loving teacher. Here are a few photos from our trip to see "The Wiz, Jr." and to boast how awesome our choir students are! We can't wait to see what's next as we "ease on down the road" this school year! Congratulations to the following students for making the 2019-2020 Honor Choir:

On May 9, we celebrated the end of another incredible year of music with our Spring Concert. This concert was particularly special and emotional, because my first set of students will be leaving Northeast to go to high school in August. Several of them have been with me since they came in as wide-eyed sixth-graders, and now they are leaving as mature, talented musicians, and I am so proud of them! We ended our "Stage & Screen" show with one of the best closing pieces of all time, "Seasons of Love" from the Broadway musical, Rent. I will miss these kiddos but am so looking forward to watching them shine in high school! This video clip features the award-winning 2016-2017 Northeast Middle School Honor Choir. |
